Songwriter, gospel singer Jessy Dixon dies at 73

CHICAGO?? Jessy Dixon, a singer and songwriter who introduced his energetic style of gospel music to wider audiences by serving as pop singer Paul Simon's opening act, died Monday. He was 73.

Miriam Dixon said her brother died Monday morning at his Chicago home. She said he had been sick but declined to provide additional details.

During a more than 50-year career, Dixon wrote songs for several popular singers, including jazz and rhythm and blues singer Randy Crawford. He later wrote songs performed by Cher, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole and Amy Grant.

But it was for his gospel singing ? religious music that combined the rhythmic beat of blues, jazz and soul ? that Dixon first gained attention. It was during an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1972 with his Jessy Dixon Singers that Dixon first came to Simon's attention. For the next eight years, Dixon toured with the pop icon, collaborating on Simon's 'Live Rhymin' Simon' and 'Still Crazy' albums.

Dixon also played keyboard with Earth Wind and Fire and guitarist Phillip Upchurch.

Dixon, who began studying music at age 5, aspired to be classical pianist but told The Associated Press in a 1997 interview that he always knew his talent was destined for use in the church.

Born March 12, 1938, in San Antonio, Dixon's professional compass was set by gospel music legend James Cleveland, who heard Dixon's teen group perform at a theatre in the south Texas city. Dixon said Cleveland liked the group, but he liked Dixon more and persuaded him to move to Chicago to join his group, the Gospel Chimes, as both a singer and pianist.

Chicago's South Side was the place to be for a gospel musician, especially in the early 1960s.

"Going to church was like going to school," Dixon said. At church, he heard the likes of Mahalia Jackson and blues pioneer Thomas A. Dorsey, who is credited with creating modern gospel singing.

"Reading his (Dorsey's) music and studying it, he was the one who wrote for Tennessee Ernie Ford, Elvis Presley and Pat Boone," Dixon said. "All these people were singing his music and were making it commercial."

Dixon credited the creativity of artists like percussionist Maurice White and blues singer Willie Dixon, no relation, inspired him to compose. He started with choral music for Chicago's Thompson Community Singers, for which he sat at the keyboards. Several of his early songs have become classics, sung in churches across America, including: "Sit At His Feet and be Blessed," "These Old Heavy Burdens" and "I Love to Praise His Name."

His more recent compositions gained him even wider acceptance. Dixon's "I Am Redeemed," released in 1993, lingered on Billboard magazine's gospel chart for more than five years.

After his stint with Simon ended, Dixon rode a wave of increased gospel music interest during the 1980s to build a following in Europe.

During his 1997 interview, Dixon noted that when he first began touring on his own outside the United States in the 1980s, the small audiences didn't have much respect for gospel as religious expression.

"At first it was viewed as entertainment," he said. "But now when I go, they ask me to share my faith as a Christian."

In the United States, Dixon was a long-time fixture on composer and singer Bill Gaither's Gospel Series, video concert broadcast on religious oriented cable television stations.

During his career, Dixon was able to produce five gold records and garner several Grammy nominations.

Dixon, is survived by a brother and sister.

Pope urges Germans not to quit church over sex abuse (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Pope Benedict appealed to Catholics not to leave the Catholic Church as he arrived on Thursday for a four-day visit to Germany, where record numbers of the faithful have quit the pews in protest against clerical sex abuse scandals.

The pope, on his third and most challenging trip to his homeland, told reporters on the flight from Rome he understood why some people -- especially victims and their loved ones -- might say "this is no longer my church."

But he urged Catholics to see the Church was made of both good and bad, and was struggling to right the wrongs committed in its ranks. Germany has been rocked by the clerical sex scandals that have swept across Europe in the past two years.

"The Church is a net of the Lord that pulls in good fish and bad fish," he said. "We have to learn to live with the scandals and work against the scandals from inside the great net of the Church."

A record 181,000 German Catholics officially quit the Church last year, a total for the first time higher than Protestants leaving their churches and baptisms into the Catholic Church.

The Church in Germany has received almost 600 requests for compensation for victims of sexual and physical abuse, while a victims' association estimates that more than 2,000 people were mistreated by Catholic priests in recent decades.

CATHOLIC REFORM REQUESTS

The pope was met at the airport by German President Christian Wulff -- a Catholic who has divorced and remarried in defiance of Church rules -- and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

In an interview published on Thursday, Wulff said he hoped Benedict would loosen some of those rules.

"Millions of people in mixed Catholic-Protestant marriages and millions of divorced and remarried Catholics, as well as other groups, expect satisfactory messages," he told the Catholic news agency KNA.

He also said he hoped the pope would say positive things about relations with Jews and Muslims.

Later in the day, the pope was due to hold talks with Merkel, address the Bundestag lower house of parliament and celebrate an open-air Mass before about 70,000 Catholics at Berlin's Olympia Stadium.

The pope's two previous visits home since his 2005 election were to the mostly Catholic regions of the Rhineland and his native Bavaria. This trip takes him to the mostly Protestant and atheist eastern part of Germany, where he can expect more criticism of his conservative policies.

Thousands of protesters are expected to voice their opposition to his visit and about 100 deputies have said they will boycott his address to parliament because they say it violates the separation of church and state.

MEETING AT LUTHER'S MONASTERY

On Friday, Benedict will travel to the eastern city of Erfurt to meet Protestant leaders in the monastery that once housed the 16th century reformer Martin Luther, whose teachings led to Western Europe's split between Catholics and Protestants.

Germany's Protestants, about equal in number to Catholics, hope Benedict will signal an opening toward some of their wishes. Protestants and some Catholics have urged him to allow joint communion services and let Protestant spouses of Catholics receive the Eucharist at Catholic Mass.

They will also listen carefully to what he says about Luther, who split western Christianity in 1517 with his 95 Theses against Catholic practices of the day, such as the Church accepting payment to absolve sin.

The Protestants want to celebrate the 500th anniversary of that event in 2017 with nationwide celebrations emphasizing Luther's contributions to Christianity and German culture. How Benedict speaks of Luther should give an indication of how the Catholic Church plans to mark that date.

After talks with Protestant leaders in Erfurt, he will travel to nearby Etzelsbach to meet a small Catholic community that withstood persecution under East Germany's officially atheist communist rule. He will end his German tour in the mostly Catholic southwestern city of Freiburg.

U.S. ambassador urges China to lower trade barriers (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China must reduce barriers to foreign companies if it is to meet its own development goals, the U.S. ambassador said in Beijing on Tuesday in a speech that reflected foreign investors' growing frustration with the pace of economic reforms in the country.

Gary Locke, who took up his new post in August, targeted restrictions on China's financial services sector and on investments by foreigners, calling on Beijing to end "expansive government interference."

"These policies are ultimately counter-productive, preventing China from receiving the capital, technology, management expertise and jobs that would come with a more open investment environment," Locke said.

"The growth model China has relied on for the last 30 years -- one predicated on low-cost exports to the rest of the world and investment in resource-intensive heavy manufacturing -- cannot serve it well in the next 30 years," he said.

The speech, given before members of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and the U.S.-China Business Council, was Locke's second public address in China as ambassador.

Locke, formerly U.S. commerce secretary, had previously vowed to press for greater access for U.S. goods and services in China.

He took the place of Jon Huntsman, who stepped down as ambassador to join the U.S. presidential race.

Chinese leaders have said they will roll back "indigenous innovation" policies that Locke and other U.S. leaders had argued shut foreign companies out of industries or required technology transfers as a condition of operating in China.

But foreign companies, many of which depend on China for a growing share of their profits, say they still face discriminatory practices and regulations, particularly at the local level, where Beijing's policies aren't always closely enforced.

Locke's remarks expanded on an earlier September speech, when he struck a cooperative tone on U.S.-China relations before Chinese university students, but called for reduced trade and investment barriers.

On Tuesday, he said advocating for better intellectual property protection would be one of his top priorities.

"Despite some progress, American and other foreign companies in industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to biotechnology to advanced manufacturing to entertainment still lose billions of dollars every year from IP theft in China," Locke said.

The United States' trade deficit with China, which hit a record $273 billion in 2010 and could top that this year, is a major irritant in relations between the world's two largest economies.

U.S. leaders argue that China's undervalued currency contributes to the problem, since it gives Chinese companies an unfair price advantage in international markets.

China's Foreign Ministry last week urged U.S. lawmakers on not to resort to trade protectionism after U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid pushed for legislation aimed at forcing China to loosen controls on its currency.

Beijing has also criticized what it says are barriers to investments by its own companies in the United States.

Locke urged Chinese companies to invest more in the U.S., where high unemployment rates continue to vex politicians.

"The United States is doing everything it can to make our investment and commercial environment as open and appealing as possible," Locke said. "Unlocking the full potential of the U.S.-China relationship requires China to take similar steps."

Rising long-haul demand and improving numbers from Japan and Korea also means members of Golf in a Kingdom: The Thai Golf Experience, a co-operative marketing group comprising Thailand?s top golf courses and hotels, are expecting a bumper high season from November to March and ongoing strong demand throughout 2012.

Earlier this month, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism and Sports Minister, Chumpol Silpa-archa, announced a target of at least 30 million foreign inbound tourists by 2015, who he said were expected to generate national revenues of 1.4 trillion baht or $US466 billion at current exchange rates.

If achieved, the target would almost double inbound arrivals in just five years. And if inbound golf market?s share and expenditure remain at current levels, golf tourism will contribute 150 billion baht ($US 4.5 billion) to the Thai economy four years from now.

Germany's Lufthansa issues profit warning (AP)

BERLIN ? Germany's biggest airline, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, says it is scaling back its earnings forecast for this year amid economic uncertainty.

The company said Tuesday that its target of increasing operating earnings from last year's euro876 million ($1.2 billion) "no longer appears to be achievable."

It says it now expects an operating profit "at the upper end of the three-digit million euro range" but isn't giving a specific figure.

Lufthansa says the change reflects a weaker-than-expected performance by its passenger airline operations in August.

It adds that "in view of ongoing economic uncertainties, further booking trend expectations were also adjusted."

The Door Prize is an art competition exclusively for painters, providing a unique and affordable opportunity for both students and practicing artists to exhibit their work in a major exhibition in the UK.

The voluntarily run project, directed by Antria Pelekanou (co-director of ?Persona Art Festival? and chief curator of ?A Moving Exhibition?) will run from 3-17 March 2012 at the Nails Gallery in Bristol city centre. The initiative of this project is to enhance the experience of Bristol?s residents and visitors,? building on Bristol?s reputation as a cultural and creative city.?

With leading institutions such as Spike Island and Arnolfini boosting Bristol?s art scene, we aim to invite artists from all over the globe to visit Bristol, showcase their artwork, and further enhance the vibrant scene the city has to offer.? There are many free annual cultural events held in Bristol such as the Bristol Balloon Festival, BrisFest and Open Studios at Jamaica Street Artists to name a few.? We believe that The Door Prize will be a great addition to the calendar, providing the public with an exciting opportunity to get involved with the arts.? All visitors to The Door Prize group exhibition will be encouraged to vote for their favourite painting on the opening, guaranteeing an engaging and entertaining experience.

The works will be selected by a combination of the judging panel and the public vote.? The winner of The Door Prize will receive an award specially commissioned from London based artist Desiree Ickerodt, and a SOLO Exhibition.? Along with the prestige of being the winner of the first Door Prize,?the winner will also be given a rare opportunity to become actively involved in the judging process of The Door Prize 2013.? In addition to the winner, there will be two runners up who will both receive a free designed publication including a selected part of their portfolio.?

In a celebration of painting as one of the most recognised and respected art forms, the competition opens the Door to the public and there can only be one winner.

Leading games manufacturers in the US are hoping to enter the online gambling market as states throughout the country reassess their stance on the industry. A number of key suppliers to traditional land based sites are hoping to make their mark on the online sector ? tapping into the craze for internet casinos throughout both Europe and the UK at large.

Leading US games suppliers such as WMS are preparing to turn their attention to online British consumers.

WMS represents just the latest company to announce its designs on the online sector. The world renowned organisation, which currently supplies lottery terminals and gaming devices to bricks and mortar venues, will be turning its attention to internet casinos this year with particular emphasis on slot machines.

The firm will be offering its acclaimed branded slots titles such as the Wizard of Oz and Star Trek to users for the first time alongside new releases such as Star of India Slots and the Fortunes of the Caribbean.
