When Writing Isn't Writing Anymore | PC Booster Blog

stroke communications always on top 256 When Writing Isn’t Writing AnymoreYou know what I?m talking about. We have graduated from carving out stone tablets to dipping delicate feather quills in ink bottles to the more efficient ballpoint pens. The twenty-first century has taken it even a bit further with keyboards and touch-sensitive buttons, and the advent of voice and motion controls (Siri ring a bell?) and eye-tracking software might revolutionize the way we take down information.

What exactly does writing entail now, in the present digital age?

Technology has gotten so good that we won?t even need to lift a finger to write or type down anything. In fact, the trend now seems to lean towards speaking your thoughts, and why not? For one thing, saying things out loud takes significantly less time than actually writing them down, and it saves a lot of space and effort.

Still, taking the time to write down whole blocks of text is often viewed as better for reading. There?s a reason then, why the written word is best for reading and the spoken word is for hearing.

Writing entails taking ideas directly from the mind and giving them some form. It?s this visual clarity that allows us to refine words into the best that they can be, hence the constant rewriting and deleting that follows after jotting down an excellent (but largely unpolished) idea. When you?re speaking, you don?t have this privilege. The spoken word is not editable, and gives you no chance to go back and look for a better way to say it. Your thought processes and your speaking have to be instantaneous.

So while you may dig that new Siri feature on your phone or voice control on your computer, it might be a better idea to take the extra time to type or actually write something. In this case, old school writing wins big time.
