Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss is reportedly in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
An undisclosed form of cancer has hospitalized Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, multiple team sources told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday. He is reportedly in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and has been visited by current and former Lakers including Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and Magic Johnson.
The 79-year-old has stepped back from many decision-making processes in the past few years as his health has declined. The family has kept his status private for the most part, but Buss was hospitalized last August with an unknown illness. He has also been treated for dehydration and blood clots in his legs over the past two years.
Radar Online reported the news on Thursday and said that Buss' health is deteriorating.
Buss has owned the Lakers since 1979, when he bought the team along with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and a ranch for a then-record $67.5 million.
Buss has ceded many decisions in the Lakers franchise to son Jim Buss and daughter Jeanie Buss, both executives with the team. However, Buss signed off on the Lakers' most recent decisions, including the hiring of Mike D'Antoni and the acquisitions of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash.
