PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- A 79-year-old Florida man has been killed in a three-vehicle accident in Rhode Island, and a 49-year-old man has been charged with driving drunk.
Police say Joseph Kalen of Bristol was driving his pickup truck in Portsmouth at around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday when he lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting a vehicle driven by Elia Giusti of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Kalen also hit a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Brian Leitao of Warren.
Giusti was pronounced dead at Newport Hospital.
Police say Kalen's breath smelled of alcohol.
He was charged with driving under the influence-death resulting and refusal to submit to a breath test. He was arraigned and released on bail. He did not immediately return a phone call.
Leitao was treated and released from the hospital.
