I'm shooting from the hip here, no prior research, so be prepared for stupidity:
Are companies that do business primarily via mail-order catalog to out of state customers forced to collect tax? If so already, nothing new here, time for the Internet to man up. If not, why are we singling out online companies? Shouldn't this system, however it turns out, be equal towards all inter-state commerce?
As to suddenly taxing the Internet helping small businesses or hurting online sales... maybe yes, maybe no. I purchase from Musician's Friend online, and with them being based in Missouri, I get charged sales tax. It doesn't stop my purchase. Why should someone else not pay that tax just because they live five minutes over the line in Kansas?
