Acer launches 16GB Iconia B1 Android tablet for ?139

DNP EMBARGO Acer outs 16GB Iconia B1A71 a lowend Android slate for &euro139

Acer's low-end Iconia B1-A71 Android tablet made its debut at CES 2013, packing a dual-core 1.2GHz Mediatek processor and 8GB of internal storage. A few months later here at MWC, the company is introducing a 16GB model of the 7-inch Jelly Bean slate, and it's on sale immediately for €139 (compared to €119 for the 8GB version). The higher storage capacity is the real story here; otherwise, you're looking at the same 1,024 x 600 display, 0.3-megapixel camera and lightweight plastic build. Like the version announced at CES, the B1 is available in Africa, Europe and the Middle East but not North America. Cruise past the break for the press release.

People in a vegetative state may feel pain

IT IS a nightmare situation. A person diagnosed as being in a vegetative state has an operation without anaesthetic because they cannot feel pain. Except, maybe they can.

Alexandra Markl at the Sch?n clinic in Bad Aibling, Germany, and colleagues studied people with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) ? also known as vegetative state ? and identified activity in brain areas involved in the emotional aspects of pain. People with UWS can make reflex movements but can't show subjective awareness.

There are two distinct neural networks that work together to create the sensation of pain. The more basic of the two ? the sensory-discriminative network ? identifies the presence of an unpleasant stimulus. It is the affective network that attaches emotions and subjective feelings to the experience. Crucially, without the activity of the emotional network, your brain detects pain but won't interpret it as unpleasant.

Using PET scans, previous studies have detected activation in the sensory-discriminative network in people with UWS but their findings were consistent with a lack of subjective awareness, the hallmark of the condition.

Now Markl and her colleagues have found evidence of activation in the affective or emotional network too (Brain and Behavior, doi.org/kfs).

Her team gave moderately painful electric shocks to 30 people with UWS, while scanning their brains using fMRI. Sixteen people had some kind of brain activation ? seven only in the sensory network but nine in the affective network as well.

These results question whether some diagnoses should change from UWS to minimally conscious, which is characterised by some level of awareness.

"I don't think this paper alone will change the clinical approach to people with diagnoses such as UWS," says Donald Weaver at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, who was not involved in the work. But it will encourage future study, he says.

Changing a diagnosis depends on whether neurologists are ready to accept alternative ways of diagnosing disorders of consciousness, says Boris Kotchoubey at the Institute of Medical Psychology and Behavioural Neurobiology in T?bingen, Germany, who worked on the study.

Nonetheless, Kotchoubey is confident that the way people with UWS are cared for will change, even if their diagnoses remain the same. "I know that many doctors working with such patients have been instructed to treat their patients as if they can understand them and perceive at least something in the environment, perhaps pain, pleasure, or emotion," he says.

But not all people are treated this way. Prior to the study, one of the people in Markl's study was given no anaesthesia before a tracheotomy, which involves an incision in the neck to allow breathing without using the nose or mouth. As people with UWS are clinically considered unable to understand pain, doctors do not have to give an anaesthetic.

From the Editor's Desk: Welcome to Barcelona

Phil Nickinson

We're back, once again, for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. This is my fourth year here. And like previous years, this one appears poised to present its own challenges as well as opportunities to showcase new tech.

On one had it's easy to look at the schedule, what we know is coming -- and what we think we know is coming -- and shrug it off. HTC, usually the highlight (or at least one of them) at MWC, has already announced its flagship for 2013 in the HTC One. Samsung's not expected to do the Galaxy S4 for a few more weeks, though it did already drop the Galaxy Note 8.0 on us. (And it did so on a day usually reserved for travel and/or accidentally leaking devices on the sides of buildings.)

So what's left to look forward to? LG's going to roll out a slew of new devices. ASUS always brings something interesting. And I'm curious to see where things stand with Mozilla and its Firefox OS, which we've played with before. Ubuntu may get the nerd credit, but it's Mozilla that's set to have the first dedicated hardware. It's not Android, specifically, but it's set to take on Android in emerging markets. So my interest is piqued.

Plus, Mobile World Congress moved to a new venue this year. I'll sorely miss the view of the Fira de Barcelona, with the towers at the entrance and the castle looking down from the hill. But the Gran Fira (just a train change and another stop down the road) promises better logistics, we're told, and is a much newer, more modern venue. So we'll see if that makes up for whatever majesty is lost.

And the food. Oh, the food and wine in Barcelona. If you can ever get the chance to come here and gorge on tapas for a few nights, I highly recommend it.

NBA Rumors: Bulls Must Be Patient with Derrick Rose When He Returns

For nearly 10 months, the city of Chicago, Illinois has been impatiently waiting to here the words, "Derrick Rose is back." With reports floating around that Rose is getting closer, anticipation for such an event is at an all-time high.

Rather than becoming a prisoner of the moment, the Chicago Bulls must be patient when the time comes for Rose to return.

After his first 5-on-5 drills since tearing his ACL in April of 2012, Jon Greenberg of ESPN Chicago reported that Rose looked "really good." Those two words were all it took for Bulls fans to enter a frenzy.

Chris Broussard of ESPN?simply threw fuel on the fire.

Slow down, Bulls fans.

With this freshly imprinted in our minds, numerous fans and analysts were speculating when it could be that D-Rose actually returned.?

According to Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago, Rose has taken the "next step."

"The big thing is you have to recognize the intensity of practice is different than the intensity of a game," [Chicago Bulls head coach Tom] Thibodeau said.?"So he's made the next step, he's got to do this for a while, there's no timetable, he's making good progress, he's right where he should be, we just want him to continue to concentrate on the rehab and when he's ready to go he'll go."?

And that's the bottom line.

Looking "ready to go" in a practice is far from the same thing as being able to play a game, whether regular season or otherwise. For that reason, it is imperative that Rose takes his time.

No matter how badly Bulls fans want to forget what happened the last time he didn't.

?

A Real 2012 Recap

When asked about Derrick Rose's 2011-12 NBA season, many people will jump to the end. They'll tell you where they were and what they were doing when Rose went down, grabbing at his knee during Game 1 of the Bulls' opening-round series.

What those people seem to forget is that there were injuries before the torn ACL.

Rose missed 27 regular-season games due to injury in 2011-12. It started in January, when Rose missed action due to what was described as "turf toe" (via the Chicago Tribune).

In February, Rose fell victim to muscular damage in his back (via the Chicago Tribune).

Come March, Rose was battling a groin injury that kept him out for 12 games before returning on April 8 against the New York Knicks (via the Chicago Tribune). It was then that Chicago learned an important truth.

They rushed him back.

Rose sat out the next game due to an injured right ankle (via ESPN Chicago). Rose again rushed his return and suffered an injured right foot (via ESPN Chicago).

That warrior's spirit that Bulls fans love about D-Rose ended up costing him 27 regular-season games?it may have also left his legs weak enough to suffer the infamous torn ACL.

?

Doing It Right

After attempting to prematurely return from injuries in 2011-12, Derrick Rose knows better in 2012-13. That's exactly why he stated that he "wouldn't mind missing" the remainder of the season (via Yahoo! Sports).

No matter how passionate he may be, Rose learned what can happen if you don't properly heal your body. Don't expect him to make the same mistake twice.

That's exactly why the Bulls, as an organization and fanbase, must display patience in these trying times. Even if Rose is to miss the remainder of the season, his long-term future is of far more important than just one year.

After all, we nearly saw his career wither away as his knee gave out from under him.

If Chicago wants to see their franchise flourish with Rose in a leadership position, patience is the only route to take. It's a frustrating and trying time, but the progress is more important than the process.

As long as Rose has the support of his fans and organization, his return will come when it's meant to be.

(AP) ? Mindy McCready's funeral has been scheduled for Tuesday in her hometown of Fort Myers, Fla.

The funeral for the late country star will be held at Crossroads Church and will be private. A Friday news release says a memorial organized by friends and the music community is tentatively scheduled for March 6 at Cathedral of the Incarnation.

McCready committed suicide Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, Ark., days after leaving a court-ordered substance abuse treatment program. The 37-year-old mother of two died from a single gunshot to the head about a month after her longtime boyfriend David Wilson was believed to have killed himself in the same location.
