PFT: Progress in talks between Welker, Patriots

SilbermanGetty Images

Well, the circle is now complete.

The NFL allowed kicker-who-has-never-kicked Lauren Silberman to pay the $275 fee and show up for a Regional Scouting Combine.? The NFL went all in with the publicity stunt, spending far more time hyping her participation than checking her credentials.

And now that the Silberman?s tryout ended in failure, the NFL is aggressively pounding the nails into her football coffin.

Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL.com, who drew the short straw to spend her Sunday afternoon at the Jets? facility watching players far too pedestrian to play even for the team that owns the place, has penned an impressive take down of Silberman.

?What we saw was a sideshow,? she writes.? ?A delusional, haughty, heartbreaking sideshow.?

Yes, it was a sideshow.? A sideshow that the NFL inexplicably embraced, in an apparent effort to lay the foundation for its plan to launch American (Football) Idol, via Regional Scouting Combines that produce folks who get a shot at the Indianapolis edition.

Hopefully with intriguing, marketable, and unique personal stories.

Here?s where it becomes impossible to draw the lines between the NFL and NFL Media.? (And, no, I?m not better than that.)? NFL Media pretends at times to be independent, but as the title of the organization confirms it?s necessarily not.? And when NFL Media produces something that appears on the surface to be independent, it?s fair to wonder whether there?s another agenda.Still, it?s impossible to call out Silberman (which Kinkhabwala does) without calling out the league (which she doesn?t).? Silberman didn?t belong there, and the NFL knew or should have known it.

?[S]he disrespected the 37 other kickers in New Jersey on Sunday who?ve spent lifetimes honing their craft.? Kinhabwala writes.? ?She blithely said her friends saw her kick somewhere in that amorphous time she began kicking and told her, ?You should try out for the NFL.?? Like it?s that easy.?

Apparently, it is.? Because the NFL let Silberman in.? And that?s the subject Kinkhabwala conspicuously omitted from her article.

Or maybe she didn?t.? Maybe she did, and someone else at NFL Media killed it.

And, yes, it?s that easy.

Telescope may 'see' alien life on white dwarfs

David A. Aguilar (CfA)

A new study finds that we could detect oxygen in the atmosphere of a habitable planet orbiting a white dwarf (as shown in this artist's illustration) much more easily than for an Earth-like planet orbiting a sun-like star.

By Amanda Doyle
Space.com

A white dwarf is a dead star that slowly cools down until it fades into oblivion. Yet it has been predicted that habitable planets can orbit a white dwarf. If we can somehow detect these planets, would we also be able to spot signs of life?

Scientists have created an artificial spectrum showing that the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope?(JWST) will be capable of detecting oxygen and water on an Earth-like planet orbiting a white dwarf.

A white dwarf is the end stage of evolution of a low mass star, and it is tiny compared to its former self. The habitable zone around a white dwarf would therefore have once been located deep within the region of space the star once inhabited, requiring planets to migrate inward to experience temperatures that are just right for surface liquid water. Infrared observations also have revealed disks of dust surrounding some white dwarfs, which could be the birthplace of a new generation of planets.

Searching for signs of life on a white dwarf?exoplanet will involve inspecting the spectral fingerprint of the planet's atmosphere. Exoplanet atmospheres can be detected and analyzed during a planetary transit, when a planet passes in front of a star from our point of view, as the background starlight shines through the planet's atmosphere. Elements in the atmosphere will absorb some of the starlight, meaning that more light than normal will be blocked at the particular wavelengths associated with that element, giving us a spectrum of the planet. [Photo Tour: Building NASA's?James Webb?Space Telescope]

This technique, called transmission spectroscopy, is difficult to utilize because the parent star is incredibly bright and thus washes out most of the planetary signal. However, if the host star is a white dwarf instead of a main sequence star, then the small stellar radius will result in a very prominent transit signal. The diameter of the average white dwarf is around 17,000 kilometers, which isn't much bigger than the Earth's diameter of 12,800 kilometers. Therefore, although white dwarfs are dim and hard to detect, it should still be possible to see the signal of an Earth-like planet transiting one.

A sign of life
Certain elements in a planet?s atmosphere may indicate the presence of life.?Such "biomarkers" include oxygen and methane, gases that are produced by different forms of life on Earth and would quickly degrade if they weren?t constantly being generated.

Some of Earth's biomarkers are prominent in the infrared region of the spectrum, making JWST ideal to search for signs of life on other planets. The JWST, due to launch in a few years, will be looking in the infrared part of the light spectrum, and it will be able to observe atmospheres on planets that are only a few times the mass of the Earth in the habitable zones of M-type stars (red stars that are cooler than our sun). However, the total amount of observing time needed for this far exceeds that which is needed to observe planets around white dwarfs, since the planetary signal is much weaker for the brighter M-dwarfs.

Avi Loeb from Harvard University and Dan Maoz from Tel-Aviv University in Israel decided to test what kind of information they might be able to pry from the atmosphere of a planet orbiting a white dwarf by creating a simulated JWST spectrum. Their synthetic spectrum showed that the oxygen (O2) ?A-band? should be easily visible, as well as signatures of water (H2O), assuming they exist on the planet.

"Detecting any of these biomarkers in the atmosphere of an Earth-copy planet around a nearby normal star, using JWST, will be extremely challenging, if not impossible," Maoz told Astrobiology Magazine. "The difficulty lies in the extreme faintness of the signal, which is hidden in the glare of the 'parent' star. The novelty of our idea is that, if the parent star is a white dwarf, that glare is greatly reduced, and one can now realistically contemplate seeing the O2 biomarker. Detecting other biomarkers will require future space telescopes that are even more ambitious than JWST."

A strong signature of oxygen in a planetary spectrum could indicate that life is present, since oxygen needs to be produced in vast quantities in order to counteract how easily it reacts with other substances. Biological processes are the main cause for high amounts of oxygen: the 21 percent of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere is produced by photosynthesis in plants and algae. If life on Earth were suddenly to be extinguished, then all the oxygen would be removed in one or two million years as it combines with rocks and dissolves in the ocean. [9 Exoplanets That Could Host Alien Life]

The search for elusive planets
No planets have yet been detected orbiting a white dwarf, due to the difficulty in observing these faint stars, however there is some evidence to suggest that such planets might exist. White dwarfs should typically have a pristine spectrum of either hydrogen or helium, as any heavier elements will sink deep within the star. However, many white dwarfs show signs of pollution by heavy elements, possibly due to rocky material in circumstellar disks being perturbed inward by unseen planets.

Some eclipsing binaries that contain a white dwarf have been observed to have unusual variations in the timing of the eclipses, which could indicate that a planet is present. Planets have also been discovered around pulsars, showing that it is possible for planets to orbit compact stellar remnants.

In order to detect Earth-like planets?around white dwarfs, a survey will first need to be performed to select the brightest, nearest white dwarfs suitable for JWST observations. Many white dwarfs will need to be monitored in order to guarantee the best chance of detecting a planet. For instance, if a third of all white dwarfs host an Earth-mass planet within their habitable zones, then 500 white dwarfs would need to be monitored to discover just one transiting Earth.

"We expect to find maybe one or two Earth-like planets that transit white dwarfs, and are observable with JWST,?if such planets at all exist around white dwarfs," said Maoz.

A survey searching for an O2 biomarker would probably benefit from focusing on white dwarfs that are over 3 billion years old. It took around 2 billion years for life on Earth to start producing significant amounts of O2, so neglecting young white dwarfs would turn the focus more on planets where life has had time to evolve. While this is obviously biased, scientists feel it makes more sense to invest limited observing time on the most likely candidates.

Although Earth-like planets are the most interesting targets from an astrobiology perspective, it turns out that they are also the optimum targets when one is looking to detect signs of life on white dwarf planets. A planet with a diameter similar to that of the Earth is just the right size for astronomers to be able to detect a good spectrum of the planet's atmosphere. If a planet is larger than the white dwarf, the probability of the planet's atmosphere transiting the star will be similar to that of an Earth-size planet. However, the greater surface gravity of the bigger planet will mean that the height of the atmosphere would likely be much lower, meaning less starlight passes through it, thus making it harder to detect.

The advantage to using JWST to observe exoplanetary atmospheres?lies in the fact that, since it will be a space-based telescope, it will be liberated from the Earth's atmosphere. If an exoplanet atmosphere is very similar to the Earth's atmosphere, then a ground-based telescope will have great difficulty disentangling it from the Earth's atmospheric spectrum. (However, if the exoplanet atmosphere is vastly different, then it could be detected amid the Earth's own signal, and large ground-based telescopes could then help to provide measurements.)? As we move into the era of searching for biomarkers on extrasolar planets, Earth-like planets around white dwarfs may be the first alien worlds where we can detect such indications of life.

Finance Ministry causes ?crisis situation? for Care Society NGO ...

Finance Ministry causes ?crisis situation? for Care Society NGO thumbnail

Lack of government support has caused a ?crisis situation? for Care Society, the?only institution providing schooling for a diversity of special needs individuals of any age and type of disability.

The Care Society was given a government-owned building in Male?s Heniveru neighborhood with a five-year lease agreement under former President Mohamed Nasheed?s government. The NGO has said it has been seeking a 20-year lease extension from President Waheed Hassan Manik?s government, to no avail.

The lease extension is necessary to secure private funds to rebuild the structure and expand services, but the Care Society has not received a definitive response from the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, despite the Ministry of Housing and Environment granting their approval, Care Society Director Shidhatha Shareef told Minivan News.

?Currently the Care Society works from a private residence donated by a Saudi Prince, but our lease is up at the end of May and we might have to shut down because we have no place to go. It will be a real loss for the children,? stated Shidhatha.

?We have not received any response from the government. The Housing Ministry approved the 20-year lease extension for the new building in writing, but the Finance Ministry has final approval and they still have not provided a definite response. We just want a yes or no answer.?

Shidhatha explained the Care Society has been seeking a ?sustainable long term premises? since 2006 and has spent the last four years continually talking to and meeting with government officials. In addition to the Housing and Finance Ministries, they have been in contact with the President?s Office, Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), and the National Disability Council.

?When we spoke to Finance Minister Abdulla Jihad about approving the lease extension he said he would ?work on it?. Additionally, the Vice President Waheed Deen visited the premises and ?expressed concern? because the building is so old.

?Meanwhile, the engineers we?ve spoken to said the structure will have to be rebuilt, even the walls are not worth reusing. Care Society has a number of private investors interested in developing the building, however they are not willing to invest if the lease term expires in 2015.

?Ultimately, the government has an obligation to facilitate the process. They are mandated by the constitution and Disability Act to provide educational services to the disabled,? said Shidhatha.

Care Society has been working for the rights of the disabled for 14 years and established the Care Development Centre in 2001, a ?special school? for special needs individuals with all sorts of disabilities, including down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, physical disabilities, as well as the hearing and vision impaired.

This school provides services for any age, ranging from early intervention programs for one year-olds all the way to elderly individuals.

?Care Society runs the only school that caters to a diversity of special needs disorders and any age group,? Shidhatha explained.

?We work with 600 children and people with disabilities regularly, our school currently has 43 students and another 20 children on the waiting list, however we lack the space to accommodate them at this time,? she added.

Currently there are two government schools, Jamaluddin which only caters to the hearing impaired and Imaduddin which offers classes for the intellectually impaired. The problem is their age limitations, as once students exceed age 18 they are sent out of the school, Shidhatha said.

Additionally, the handful of other NGOs working with the disabled persons in the Maldives only address one type of disability or limit their target group age, Shidhatha added.

Care Society?s objectives include promoting rights of disabled people, rights of children and women, capacity building of CBOs and NGOs and assisting victims of natural disasters.

?Responsibility for ensuring disabled rights first falls on government?: Waheed

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) began a ?National Inquiry on Access to Education for Children with Disabilities? in January 2013.

The study was launched in November 2012 to ?look into the practices, policies and laws related to the education for children with disabilities. HRCM will also inquire into the States role in providing for people with disabilities in a non-discriminatory manner, with a special focus on the educational needs of children with disabilities?.

According to the most recent study on the disabled conducted by the HRCM in 2010, there are 2250 children with disabilities in the Maldives that are registered with the government, while only 230 of these children attend school. Overall, 14,100 persons, about 4.7 percent of the population, were found to have permanent disabilities.

In July 2012, the Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights and the national Disability Council conferred the Disability Award 2012 to ?individuals and organizations working for the rights of the disabled?.

Care Society received an award, which was presented by President Waheed.

Waheed ?noted that the responsibility of ensuring the rights of the disabled first falls on the government, and assured that the government was always carrying out that responsibility as best as possible.?

Recent studies by the HRCM ? primarily a women?s rights study and children?s participation study ? found that lack of access to services were the primary issues discussed by the disabled.

Inadequate special needs schools for children and facilities within existing schools for them, as well as education and mental health service opportunities are of particular concern.

The Finance Ministry, President?s Office, and Housing Ministry were not responding to calls at the time of press.

The price of diversity in Morocco | Morocco World News

By Mly Abdellah Taibi

Morocco World News

New York, March 2, 2013

Morocco is one of the countries that are known for its cultural and linguistic diversity. In a country where tourism is a fundamental pillar of economy, this diversity is a credit added to the attractions to Morocco. However, this linguistic diversity has heavily affected one of the most important variables of socio-economic development: educations. In the recent classification of educational systems around the world, Morocco ranked at the bottom of Arab countries and was knocked out even by countries with the poorest economic and social conditions.

Morocco has been making many amendments on the educational system but still all the efforts are considered fruitless. Since independence, Morocco has struggled to improve the educational system, starting by importing teachers from France and other countries waiting to train Moroccan teachers. By 1989 Morocco made a leap towards Arabization of primary and secondary grades. This shift is still considered, especially by those who witnessed the French system, as the beginning of the dramatic retreat of educational standards.

However, French is still considered a basic components of the educational system in Morocco since all scientific disciplines use this language as a teaching/learning vehicle. Between 1999/2009 the government introduced an important reform that had focused on education as a basic element of development. For any observer inside the field of education, it?s obviously seen that there is a tremendous effort to improve this field by increasing numbers of staff and teachers, introducing technology to schools, facilitating conditions in rural areas, trying any newest teaching methods..etc. Surprisingly, all these efforts led to insignificant outcomes.

As the government pants to find a remedy for this issue, many facts and details are ignored. Moroccan?s linguistic complexity is the key element to understand this perpetual failure of education policies. Considering that more than 50 percent of Moroccans speak Amazigh language as their mother tongue and the rest speak Darija, an Arabic dialect, while education utilizes classical Arabic as a language for teaching and learning. This incompatibility surely leads to a shortage in performance of students. It?s clearly unfair to compare the performance of an Amazigh child in Morocco with an Arab child in the Middle East basing on tests introduced in Arabic language. The Amazigh child has to make double efforts: decipher the language first, and then understand the content, whereas the Arab is only required to understand the content.

This same issue has been raised in the USA some years ago after the disproportionate representation of Hispanic and Afro-American children in special education. It?s found that the majority of children who are considered mentally disabled and condemned to special education are Latinos and African Americans. The unfairness lies in the fact that for classification, IQ tests ?intelligence quotient tests? are given to students in English while Latinos mother tongue is Spanish. Concerning African Americans, the problem doesn?t lie in language but the absence of any consideration of their socio-economic status. Both socio-economically and linguistically speaking, the Euro-American children are clearly favored. To make these IQ tests credible, the USA started to consider mother tongue as crucial element of determining a child?s cognitive competencies.

Hispanic student are lucky to be saved from a disability judgment. Though it does not require experts to spot this obstacle, Amazigh children in Morocco still suffer from inequity. Personally, I had a traumatizing experience related to this. When I was in the 2nd grade, my teacher was classifying me as the top of my class in a school where all students were Amazighophone. In the middle of the year, a neighbor school sent a group of Arabophone students to study with us as they have a problem in their school. I remember, the teacher did not care about me any more, since he had some students with whom he could communicate easily in Arabic. We, all other Amazigh kids in that class, felt ourselves out of the game. We were just watching conversations in a foreign language and we were technically considered disabled.

Anybody can admit that solving this issue is not an easy task at all, though it?s theoretically feasible. Banning Amazigh language from our culture was one of the suggestions. This is an impossible theory even though there were many unsuccessful tries along history to uproot, intentionally or unintentionally, this language and culture. After the Islamic conquest around the 7th century, the Arabic language became the prestigious language in Morocco. While the Amazigh language was restricted and was gradually losing its richness due to a heavy borrowing from Arabic. At a certain point, this language became next to primitive because it was mainly preserved by people of mountains, especially, who didn?t have a huge contact with the Arab culture.

In Modern Morocco and up to what is known as ?the speech of Agadir? in 2001, using Amazigh was not allowed. In 2001, king Mohamed VI recognized Amazigh language as a component of the Moroccan Identity. This recognition was supported by the establishment of IRCAM, The Royal Institute of the Amazigh Culture to foster and promote the presence of this language.

The other suggestion is teaching in Amazigh areas should use Amazigh language as a vehicle of knowledge. This might seem difficult but not impossible for many reasons: It requires time, financial resources and a serious policy. However, many people will not agree with this idea because it will split Morocco in two.

As I said, it?s difficult to realize this objective because the Amazigh is a recently standardized language. This resurrected tongue needs more time and efforts to reach the same position as its peers, and this can be achieved by adapting a realistic strategy for its promotion.

After passing through all the obstacles from primary to secondary school, Amazighophone students are joined by their Arabophone peers for new stage of struggling at the post-secondary education. Given that French is the language in which many scientific disciplines are being taught, students are required to convert all the thirteen years of studies in Arabic to French.

At the university level, students, mainly in scientific disciplines, need to adapt to the new requirements by mastering French in addition to the content to graduate. Through all this process, one can observe that we spend much of our school lives shifting from one language to another while other developed countries use their mother tongue from cradle to grave.

In my psychology class here in an American university, I feel that my American colleagues have more advantages. We all study in English and we are required to pass the same exams and perform the same duties while English is their first language whereas it?s my fourth. I think that this is one of the reasons that may keep developed countries always leaders since underdeveloped countries are linguistically dependent and their efforts to have their own reliable learning resources is still limited.

Wisconsin salon shooter sought cabbie's advice before killings

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A man who shot and killed his estranged wife and two other women at a Milwaukee-area hair salon last fall told a taxi driver about his marital problems and sought his advice minutes before pulling the trigger, according to documents released on Friday.

Radcliffe Haughton, 45, killed 42-year-old Zina Haughton and two other women, and wounded four others, at the Azana Salon and Spa on October 21. He then turned the gun on himself and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the documents released by the Brookfield, Wisconsin, police department, Haughton told the taxi driver who picked him up at his home and drove him to the salon in suburban Brookfield that he was having domestic problems and had purchased a gun.

The taxi driver, Jesse Thomas, told police that Haughton asked him what he would do if he found himself in a similar situation. The cabbie told police he advised Haughton to do nothing because it "wasn't worth it."

Thomas said Haughton was shaking visibly as he exited the cab and accidentally tore the $20 bill he gave him as a tip.

The cab driver also told police that he and Haughton stopped at a Burger King, purchased food at the drive-thru and ate it together on the side of the road before heading to the salon.

Haughton had a police record for domestic violence. He was cited for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, described as domestic abuse, stemming from an incident on January 8, 2011. That charge was dismissed on June 15, 2011.

Haughton had also been placed under a restraining order and directed to surrender his firearms in connection with a domestic abuse case involving his wife just days before the killings.
