Crawl Space: Invasive Ant Armies Clash on U.S. Soil

One of the most aggressive invasive ants in the world seems to have met its match in North Carolina--but if the arthropod challenger prevails, don?t expect it to play nice

The Argentine ant has spread to every continent except Antarctica, overwhelming native ants with sheer numbers and fierce battle tactics. But they may have met their match in a recent arrival: the Asian needle ant. The cross-species face-off, a surprise to entomologists, could topple ecosystems where the battle lines are drawn.

Invading ants make up just a handful of the more than 12,4000 described ant species in the world, says Jes S?e Pedersen, an associate professor at the Center for Social Evolution at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Yet, their impact on ecosystems, human health and the economy far outstrips their Lilliputian size. Red fire ants can endanger the lives of those who unwittingly stumble on a nest. Some invasive species are agricultural pests or ?farm? voracious plant-eating aphids to milk them for their sugar-laden excrement.

Invasive ants often kill, eat or outcompete native ant species?the latter of which play key roles in the ecosystems where they make their homes. Many native ants are gardeners?they till the soil and plant seeds. Alien ants that come from a different environment do not pick up the jobs of those they push out.

The invaders can also create an ecosystem meltdown: Yellow crazy ants that invaded Christmas Island aggravated native birds so much that they have changed their eating habits and feast on the island?s famous red crabs. Food competition from the ants, combined with other invasive species such as feral cats and black rats, may have led to the extinction of the Christmas Island pipistrelle bat.

Figuring out an invading species?s impact on an ecosystem is tricky. Researchers rarely observe an invasion in progress. But this time may be different. The opening salvos between the newly recognized invasive Asian needle ant and the more notorious Argentine ant offer just that opportunity, Pedersen says.

Researchers at North Carolina State University in Raleigh unexpectedly stumbled on the unfolding ant war several years ago. Eleanor Spicer Rice, a graduate student studying entomology at the time, was tracking a network of Argentine ant nests in an office park in North Carolina and found a few nests of Asian needle ants. ?It is really weird that another ant could be nesting within the Argentine territory,? Spicer Rice says. Argentine ants do not tolerate competition. Typically, they are able to push other ants out of an area by attacking the rivals and dominating food sources. Originally from South America, they form massive interrelated networks of nests called super colonies.

The situation seemed unprecedented. The largest ant colony in the world is an Argentine ant super colony spanning more than 6,000 kilometers in the Mediterranean region. For some reason, across a few square miles of North Carolina the Argentine ants? world-conquering strategy was not working. The Asian needle ants were, in fact, gaining ground. In March 2009 Spicer Rice and her colleagues found Argentine ants at 90 trees, sharing nine of them with the Asian ants. By June 2011, the Argentine ants had been driven back to 67 trees, were neighbors with the interlopers in 15 and the Asian needle ants had taken over 17 of the sites.

To see if the Asian needle ants were driving the other species away, the researchers selectively poisoned the Asian needle ants in some areas. The Argentine intruders returned, indicating that predators, resource availability or other factors were not behind their initial retreat.

Final Hobbit Installment Bumped to December 2014

hobbit-there-and-back-again-image-orlando-bloom-slice

Fans of Peter Jackson?s The Hobbit trilogy will have to wait a few more months to see the final installment, The Hobbit: There and Back Again. ?Previously slated to open on July 18, 2014, Warner Bros. has pushed the closer back to December 17, 2014. ?This robs the picture of a summer box office, but takes it out of competition with X-Men: Days of Future Past, which opens on July 18th, as well as Marvel?s Guardians of the Galaxy, slated to open on August 1, 2014. ?As of right now, The Hobbit: There and Back Again has the sole spot on December 17th, but Minions and Brad Bird?s Tomorrowland are expected to open that weekend. ?Will Gluck?s Annie remake and Shawn Levy?s Night at the Museum 3 are expected to open Christmas Day 2014.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A judge refused Friday to delay Lindsay Lohan's trial on reckless driving and other charges and admonished her attorney, saying the lawyer needs help on the case.

Superior Court Judge James R. Dabney advised New York lawyer Mark Heller that his pleadings weren't appropriate under California law.

Heller was told to get assistance from another attorney or Lohan would be required to attend hearings to gauge his ability to represent her.

The actress wasn't obligated to attend Friday's hearing. Heller said after the hearing that while his motions didn't conform to California law, he was simply trying to protect Lohan's rights and would continue to do so.

Dabney also said there was no good reason to delay the March 18 trial, noting that he was skeptical that more time would allow Lohan to demonstrate she had changed after years of run-ins with the law.

"I don't know how the next two weeks is suddenly going to change the history of this case, these cases," Dabney said.

Lohan has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, lying to police and obstructing officers after her sports car crashed in June as she and a passenger headed to a movie shoot.

Lohan was on probation in a theft case at the time.

Heller had sought a delay as he works with prosecutors to reach a plea deal that could allow Lohan to pursue inspirational speaking or other community service.

The attorney rejected the notion that the actress needs rehab, noting that she has been sentenced to treatment several times before and she still ends up in trouble. "This is not what she needs ? rehab," Heller said.

He said Lohan is engaged on one-on-one psychotherapy.

"Lindsay doesn't have a problem with alcohol and drugs," he said. "Lindsay's issues are different," he said, declining to elaborate further.

Lohan could face a return to jail if she is convicted, or if a judge determines she violated the terms of her sentence in the 2011 necklace theft case.

FREE Download: World In 2013 ? ICT Facts & Figures

=========

Geneva, 27 February, 2013???New figures released today by the International Telecommunications Union confirm strong sustained demand for information and communication technology (ICT) services, with uptake spurred by a steady fall in the price of broadband Internet.

ITU?s The World in 2013: ICT Facts and Figures report predicts that there will soon be as many mobile-cellular subscriptions as people inhabiting the planet, with the figure set to nudge past the seven billion mark early in 2014. More than half of all mobile subscriptions are now in Asia, which remains the powerhouse of market growth, and by the end of 2013 overall mobile penetration rates will have reached 96% globally, 128% in the developed world, and 89% in developing countries.

With many markets saturated, and penetration at over 100% in four of the six ITU world regions, mobile-cellular uptake is already slowing substantially, with growth rates falling to their lowest levels ever in both the developed and developing worlds.

Internet

ITU estimates that 2.7 billion people ? or 39% of the world?s population ? will be using the Internet by end 2013.

Internet access, however, will remain limited in the developing world, with only 31% of the population forecast to be online at the end of 2013, compared with 77% in the developed world. Europe will remain the world?s most connected region with 75% Internet penetration, largely outpacing Asia and the Pacific (32%) and Africa (16%).

Household Internet penetration ? often considered the most important measure of Internet access ? continues to rise. By end 2013, ITU estimates that 41% of the world?s households will be connected to the Internet.

Over the past four years, household access has grown fastest in Africa, with an annual growth rate of 27%. But despite a positive general trend, 90% of the 1.1 billion households around the world that are still unconnected are in the developing world.

Speaking to government Ministers gathered at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun I. Tour? said: ?We have made the most extraordinary progress in the first twelve years of the new millennium?and yet we still have far to go. Two thirds of the world?s population ? some 4.5 billion people ? is still offline. This means that two thirds of the world?s people are still locked out of the world?s biggest and most valuable library. Two thirds of the world?s people are still refused access to the world?s biggest market place. And two thirds of the world?s people are still denied the extraordinary opportunities now available to the other third. Mobile broadband is clearly going to be a vital part of the solution, and we must continue to ?mobilize? to ensure that all the world?s people have affordable, equitable access to the Internet.?

?Near-ubiquitous mobile penetration makes mobile cellular the ideal platform for service delivery in developing countries,? said Brahima Sanou, Director of the ITU?s Telecommunication Development Bureau. ?Our new m-Powering Development initiative is designed to leverage this potential across markets worldwide, and especially in rural and remote communities.?

Pricing

The cost of fixed-broadband services has dropped precipitously over the past five years, declining by 82% if measured as a share of GNI per capita. But in developing countries, residential fixed-broadband services remain expensive, accounting for just over 30% of average monthly GNI per capita ? compared to just 1.7% of average national income in wealthy countries.

Broadband is most affordable in Europe, where a basic subscription costs on average less than 2% of GNI per capita. In some developing countries, that figure rises to well over 50%.

Differences in high-speed broadband Internet access still persist. Star performers in terms of access speeds are the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong (China) and Japan, alongside some surprise top performers in Europe, including Bulgaria, Iceland and Portugal. In Africa, fewer than 10% of fixed-broadband subscriptions offer speeds of at least 2Mbit/s ? a situation also reflected in several countries in Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and the Arab world.

Gender

The report also reveals for the first time global figures on the number of women (1.3 billion) and men (1.5 billion) using the Internet. The figures represent 37% of all women, compared with 41% of all men ? but the gender gap is more pronounced in the developing world, where 16% fewer women than men use the Internet, compared with only 2% fewer women than men in the developed world. However, despite the disparities, the gender gap continues to close, with access to mobile technology increasingly within reach of women worldwide.

GDC sees devs shifting away from consoles - GamesIndustry.biz

It appears the big trend in game development is being small. Organizers of the Game Developers Conference today released the results of a GDC State of the Industry survey of more than 2,500 attendees registered for last year's show or this year's, and the results leaned heavily toward smaller teams and smaller systems.

According to the survey, 46 percent of all attendees reported working in companies of 10 people or less, with 53 percent of respondents self-identifying as indie developers. The indie pool shows significant signs of growth (or at least churn) as well; of those self-styled indies, 51 percent have been independent for less than two years. As for what they work on, tablets and smartphones drew the lion's share, with 58 percent of GDC attendees planning to release their next games on tablets and smartphones.

As for the traditional console industry, the numbers for the Big Three were much smaller. The Xbox 360 was the most popular console platform for devs' next games, with 13.9 percent of respondents targeting their next title for the system. After that came the PlayStation 3 (12.4 percent), Microsoft's next-gen system (11.3 percent), the PlayStation 4 (10.8 percent), and the Wii U (almost 6.5 percent). Dedicated handhelds proved even less popular, with barely five percent of developers making their next title for the PlayStation Vita, and less than three percent working on Nintendo's 3DS.

Interest levels in the platforms are similarly skewed toward more open systems. When asked which new markets were the most interesting for them, 58.2 percent reported tablets, with 56.4 percent saying smartphones. Steamboxes and Android-based consoles were the next most intriguing, garnering interest from 45.4 percent and 37.1 percent of respondents, respectively. As for the next-gen from the console manufacturers, Microsoft's next box was interesting to 29.5 percent, followed by the PS4 at 27.3 percent. The Wii U lagged significantly with interest from 12.6 percent of surveyed developers.

Even the funding for games is leaning small. Only 10 percent of the GDC attendees reported that their work was primarily funded by publishers. Companies were more typically relying on their own assets (37 percent), or an individual's personal savings (35 percent). Outfits like Kickstarter are also moving the needle. Only four percent of developers' current projects were crowdfunded, but 44 percent said they planned to work on crowdfunded games in the future.

The 2013 Games Developers Conference takes place in San Francisco from March 25-29 and GamesIndustry International will be there with a full team to bring you extensive coverage.

AM05 Black HeroBeautiful design and utility are, in many ways, paramount when it comes to home electronics. That's why I was really impressed by the the new AM05 space heater/cooler from Dyson. It's a completely quiet, blade-less system that comes in a black and nickel color scheme that looks like it fell off of Boba Fett's Slave 1.
