In college towns, poverty dips without students

Talk about your struggling college students.

A new report released Monday by the U.S. Census shows that two Florida cities with large concentrations of college students experience big declines in poverty rates when college students aren't counted.

The poverty rate in Gainesville, home of the University of Florida, declines 15.5 percentage points when college students not living with relatives are excluded. In Leon County, home of Florida State University, the dip is 11.5 percentage points.

Both cities have poverty rates significantly higher than the national average of 15.2 percent.

Including college students, more than a third of all residents in Gainesville live below the poverty line. In Tallahassee, it's under a third of all residents.

The report suggests students artificially inflate poverty counts.

The Cuban-American swimmer dove into stardom after taking home 5 medals (two gold, two silver, one bronze) at the 2012 London Olympics, bringing him to a grand total of 11 Olympic medals. This feat is only second best to fellow competitor Michael Phelps and indicates Lochte?s rise within the sport. Kyrie Irving Is The NBA Live 14 Cover Athlete

22784398 480 Kyrie Irving Is The NBA Live 14 Cover Athlete

EA Sports confirmed today that Kyrie Irving ? the young, star point guard of the Cleveland Cavaliers ? will be gracing the cover of NBA Live 14. After a three year hiatus from the pro-basketball simulation scene, EA is attempting to bounce back with their answer to NBA 2k?s LeBron Jamesian basketball dominance.

NBA Live 14, the first basketball simulation from EA since NBA Live 2010, has an uphill battle ahead of it. After the briefly renamed NBA Elite 11?s abrupt cancellation, the folks at EA took an extra year off to create a quality game to rival that of their competitor?s. NBA Live 13 was supposed to be released last fall but was, once again, cancelled.

Now, Live is looking forward. This year?s instalment will be released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Developmental diaries boast of new snappy-named technology like the Ignite Engine, which is apparently being included in all of the next generation EA Sports releases, and ?Bouncetek? a ?physics based dribbling mechanic? promising heightened ?authenticity? and ?responsiveness? to set it apart from the other guys.

Whether these fancy new buzzwords deliver with substance, let alone enough substance to seriously compete with 2k?s dominance, remains to be seen. But the deliberate choice of Kyrie Irving is particularly poignant given who 2k chose as their cover athlete and former saviour of Cleveland ? LeBron James.

James?s controversial exit from Cleveland in pursuit ? and attainment ? of championship rings left a rust-belt city known more in recent years for its sports short-comings than achievements angry and desperate. In steps Kyrie Irving, the 2011 first overall draft pick who?s gone on to become a league-wide superstar and the face of a franchise once thought dead. The Cavs are now on the upswing. Their rebuilding process, while not quite complete, has given their fans a substantial reason for hope.

As EA?s Live moves back into the competitive fold, choosing a young star player on the rise as their cover athlete is appropriate. Choosing this particular one, the guy who?s meant to replace LeBron, is bold. Only time will tell if they can succeed. One thing?s for sure, the renewed rivalry for virtual basketball supremacy is centered around Cleveland, Ohio ? and that is very, very strange.

NBA Live 14 is out later this year.

Moody?s reviews Philippines for likely debt upgrade

    Agence France-Presse

MANILA, Philippines?Moody?s Investors Service signaled Thursday it was likely to elevate the Philippine government?s debt rating to investment-grade, citing the former basket-case nation?s robust economic growth and political stability.

Two other major credit rating agencies, Standard and Poor?s and Fitch, have already upgraded Philippine government securities to investment-grade earlier this year.

?Moody?s Investors Service has placed the Ba1 foreign and local currency long-term issuer and bond ratings of the Government of the Philippines on review for upgrade,? the US ratings agency said in a statement.

The next-highest rating on its scale is ?Baa3,? considered the lowest in the investment-grade ranks.

Moody?s said a rating in the ?Baa? ranks is ?subject to moderate credit risk,? while ?Ba? rates entail ?substantial credit risk.?

The Philippines last defaulted on its foreign debt in the early 1980s.

    ?Exceeded Moody?s expectations?

?The Philippines? economic performance has exceeded Moody?s expectations; supporting the view that the economy will grow significantly faster than similarly rated peers over at least the next two to three years,? it said.

This growth came despite a global economic slump and with no signs that the economy was overheating or facing ?imbalances,? it added.

It credited the improvement to the reform agenda of President Benigno Aquino, who has put fighting corruption at the fore of his priorities.

Co-founder of Russia's top search engine in coma

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's largest search engine, Yandex, said Thursday that its co-founder Ilya Segalovich is on life support in a coma.

Yandex director general Arkady Volozh had said earlier in the day on the company's blog that Segalovich, who was undergoing treatment for cancer, had died. But within a few hours, the company corrected the statement.

It said the initial word about his death had come from the family, but further information indicated Segalovich was on life support with no brain function. The company said it was waiting for more details.

Segalovich, 48, crated Yandex in 1997 with Volozhh, his school friend. The company has been a Russian success story, with a share of 62 percent of the search engine market compared with Google's 25.6 percent.

Segalovich invented the engine's name, derived from Yet Another Index, and served as its chief technological officer.

Volozh praised his "encyclopedic knowledge of technologies and a clear vision of product."

Heck Introduces Mortgage Forgiveness Tax Relief Act to Help ...

WASHINGTON, DC - July 24, 2013 - (RealEstateRama) -- With Las Vegas and the state of Nevada still struggling to reverse the devastating effects of the housing crisis, Congressman Joe Heck (NV-03) today introduced legislation that would help homeowners who are underwater on their mortgage. The Mortgage Forgiveness Tax Relief Act ensures underwater homeowners are not subjected to additional income taxes if a portion of their mortgage is forgiven. Homeowners who undergo a mortgage refinancing or "short sell" their home would be required to pay an additional income tax on the difference between the homes original value and the current value. However, Rep. Heck's bill would prevent that sum from being taxed as income because the homeowner never actually receives that money

Snowden has information that could be the US's 'worst nightmare,' journalist says

    REUTERS/Sergio Moraes

A file video grab courtesy of the British newspaper The Guardian shows former CIA employee Edward Snowden during an exclusive interview with the newspaper's Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras in Hong Kong.

By Becky Bratu, Staff Writer, NBC News

Former CIA contractor and self-declared leaker Edward Snowden possesses information that could badly damage the United States if revealed, the journalist who first published the leaked documents said in a newspaper interview.?

"Snowden has enough information to cause more harm to the U.S. government in a single minute than any other person has ever had in the history of the United States," Guardian blogger and columnist Glenn Greenwald told the?Argentinean daily La Nacion in an interview published Saturday. "But that is not his objective."

Snowden has been charged with espionage by the United States and his passport was revoked after?leaks about the country's spying methods, including eavesdropping on global email traffic, have upset U.S. allies and foes alike.

"His objective is to expose the software that people around the world use without knowing to what they are exposing themselves?and without having consciously agreed to surrender their rights to privacy," Greenwald said.

He told the newspaper that Snowden has already distributed thousands of documents and has made sure several people around the world have all the files he possesses.?

"If anything were to happen to him, those documents would be made public," Greenwald said. "That's his insurance policy."

"The U.S. government should be on its knees every day praying that nothing happens to Snowden, because if something happens to him, all the information would be revealed and that would be its worst nightmare," he added. ?

Snowden emerged Friday from his hideaway in the Moscow airport -- where he has been stranded since June 23 -- telling human rights groups that he wants temporary asylum in Russia but still hopes to travel to Latin America to avoid prosecution by U.S. authorities.

The 30-year-old?has been offered asylum by three countries: Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador. He is apparently unable to travel to them without entering airspace controlled by the United States, risking an enforced grounding that would lead to his arrest.

Greenwald told Reuters on Tuesday that Snowden would likely accept asylum in Venezuela.

Only a few countries -- including several Latin American countries, China and Russia -- have dared to challenge the United States, Greenwald told La Nacion.?

He said Snowden has documents that detail how the United States captures transmissions in Latin America and the programs used in this practice.

"One way of intercepting communications is through a telephone company in the United States that has contracts with telecommunications companies in most Latin American countries," Greenwald said, without revealing that company's name.?
