ANZ CEO Sells A$10.8 Million Shares To Fund Tax Bill, Repay Debt

Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. (ANZ.AU) Chief Executive Mike Smith has sold 10.8 million Australian dollars (US$11.3 million) worth of shares to help him pay off debt and fund an upcoming tax bill.

In a notice lodged with the local exchange on Friday, ANZ said that Mr. Smith exercised 440,000 options this week at a price of A$24.74--more than 60% of the 700,000 he was granted by shareholders in 2008. The options were originally vested at an exercise price of A$14.18.

"The exercise of the share options and the sale of the resulting shares was undertaken by Mr Smith in order to fund a forthcoming income tax payment and to repay debt," according to the statement.

40 indicted in meth ring run from Indiana prisons

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A prison inmate ran a drug ring involving at least three Indiana prisons that sold heroin, methamphetamine and other drugs around the state using cellphones smuggled in by guards, according to a federal indictment unsealed Wednesday that charges 40 people in connection with the scheme.

Among the inmates charged is alleged ringleader Oscar Perez, who's serving time for murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors allege he coordinated drug sales on city streets and once conference called using smuggled cellphones with two other inmates, housed in different prisons, about "pooling their financial resources" to get a discount on heroin.

At least 17 people appeared in court Wednesday in Indianapolis after about 300 FBI agents fanned out across the state and made arrests. Prosecutors said the defendants were flight risks, and the judge ordered them to remain in custody.

The indictment alleges that Perez and another prison inmate, Justin Addler, used cellphones to oversee the purchase of "large amounts" of heroin from a source in Chicago.

"Once acquired, the heroin was brought from Illinois to Indiana by the use of couriers where it was, in turn, distributed on the streets to various places" in central and southern Indiana, according to the 31-page indictment.

The activity occurred at the Westville Correction Facility in northern Indiana, the Wabash Valley Correction Facility in southwestern Indiana and the Pendleton Correctional Facility northeast of Indianapolis, according to the indictment.

Court documents allege that one corrections officer, Jon Dobbins, was found "in possession" of nearly 21 grams of a mixture and substance containing meth, and had a cellphone that he intended to "clandestinely bring" into the prison and leave with an inmate.

Dobbins didn't have a listed phone number in Indiana, according to phone records. He was the only prison guard named in the indictment, though the document refers to multiple prison guards being involved.

U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Tim Horty said prosecutors had no comment on the indictment. He confirmed that Dobbins was the only correctional officer named in the indictment, though he wouldn't comment on whether additional indictments are expected.

The Indiana Department of Correction issued a statement saying it has been cooperating with the FBI since the investigation began and that that department uncovered the evidence that led to Dobbins.

This week for Shabbat I was staying at a house that is Shomer Shabbas (A shomer Shabbat or shomer Shabbos is a person who observes the mitzvot (commandments) associated with Judaism's Shabbat). It was a very new experience for me and I went in a little scared to mess up the families Shabbat. Luckily, nothing went wrong it was an altogether very fun Saturday. I got to wake up late and when I went out, a lot of their family was over. I played board games with the kids, listened to the adults argue in Hebrew, and didn't think once about Facebook. It was a little crazy since I met seven of the nine if my host mothers siblings and their families, but I really enjoyed having a day off and not having to worry about what was happening on the Internet.

Governor Pat Quinn signed two new housing laws to provide people with disabilities with more access to affordable rental housing, and to further protect homeowners from mortgage fraud. The supportive housing law makes $10 million in rental housing subsidies available over 15 years to eligible landlords. In addition, the governor announced the commitment of up to $40 million in Illinois Jobs Now! capital funds for developers of permanent supportive housing. These laws build on the governor?s strong commitment to providing more housing options for people with disabilities, and to protecting consumers from predatory lenders.

?I am committed to strengthening Illinois? communities and our economy,? Governor Quinn said. ?Thanks to these new laws, more people with disabilities will have a safe and comfortable place to call home and homeowners will be better protected.?

House Bill 5450, sponsored by Rep. Esther Golar (D-Chicago) and Sen. William Delgado (D-Chicago), enables grant funding to be designated for people with disabilities under the Rental Housing Support Program, one of the nation?s largest state rental assistance programs, which is administered by the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA). The new law and the Illinois Jobs Now! funding commitment will significantly increase opportunities for people with disabilities to access affordable rental housing throughout Illinois. The new law takes effect immediately.

?I was able to work with IHDA on this new law, which allows grant funding to develop housing opportunities for people with disabilities,? said Sen. Delgado, Chairman of the Senate Public Health Committee. ?The previous law stated that to qualify for these grants a person had to have a specific disability, the new law will allow all with disabilities to qualify for assistance.?

Also today, Governor Quinn signed House Bill 4521, sponsored by Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago) and Sen. Jacqueline Y. Collins (D-Chicago), which raises fees for mortgage company licensees and significantly increases fines penalizing mortgage fraud to better protect homeowners. The new law also strengthens the ability of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation?s Division of Banking to investigate and prosecute mortgage fraud throughout the state. The new law is effective immediately, with one provision taking effect Jan. 1, 2013.

?Exercising vigilant oversight in the areas of loan modifications and short sales will be particularly beneficial as we work to slow the rate of foreclosure and protect distressed homeowners from financial exploitation,? said Sen. Collins.

Earlier this year, Governor Quinn launched the Active Community Care Transition (ACCT) Plan to increase the number of people with developmental disabilities and mental health conditions living in community-based care settings across Illinois. The ACCT Plan also will help the state save hundreds of thousands of dollars per year while providing good care for people with developmental disabilities.

?Supportive housing makes a difference in the lives of people with disabilities by empowering them to live independently as part of a community,? said IHDA Executive Director Mary R. Kenney. ?Under Governor Pat Quinn?s leadership, IHDA has financed approximately 1,300 units of supportive housing to enable people with disabilities to live independently.?

With House Bill 5450, landlords providing supportive housing units may apply for subsidies under the Long Term Operating Support (LTOS) portion of the Rental Housing Support Program. The LTOS program is funded through a $10 fee collected from real estate document recordings, and the new round of funding will help an estimated 150 households headed by a person with a disability.

In addition, today?s Illinois Jobs Now! commitment will spur the development of approximately 200 new supportive housing units through a new round of the state?s Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Development Program. Governor Quinn?s historic capital program included $130 million for affordable and supportive housing to further create opportunities for people with disabilities to live independently. The first round of the PSH Program financed 122 units of supportive housing.

A history of Finnish experiments in 'buzzing' BASIC over FM radio ...

Sein?joki, Finland was a tough place to be a budding geek back in 1985. Just ask Eero Tunkelo, a grade school student with a doctor for a father, a mother who taught sewing and textile design, and a newfound love for computers and programming.

"Computers were new, so anything you did, it was -- wow!" he told me during a recent phone call. Such was Tunkelo's passion for the technology that he spent an entire summer working so that he could purchase his own Commodore VIC-20-an early home-oriented machine that ran Commodore BASIC 2.0 and predated the more advanced Commodore 64.

With his VIC-20, Tunkelo taught himself BASIC, then studied assembly language. He wrote programs that ran "straight to the metal," as he put it, but also came from the heart. One included graphics that celebrated his sister's high school graduation. But the young innovator felt isolated. "Computers were not as popular as they are now," Tunkelo said, and few schools had one.

Then came a remarkable radio show that changed the landscape for him and a generation of Finnish technology lovers -- a show that literally broadcast code over the airwaves.

The Micro Club
This work-in-progress was produced by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (known by its Finnish abbreviation, YLE), Finland's public media system. Educator Kai R. Lehtonen, who produced educational radio shows for Finnish schools, supervised the new show-although he disliked using the "e-word."

"My personal view was that if we advertised too much the 'educational' side we would be like the British redcoats in the American revolutionary war and that we should rather act as the American minutemen who took their adversary by surprise," Lehtonen told me in an email interview. "The purpose should be to catch the audience because the programs were interesting and well made and not only because a teacher would order the kids to listen."

At the top of Lehtonen's priorities list was encouraging his listeners to explore computing, and he was captivated by early experiments in the Netherlands which involved streaming computer code over radio frequencies. The finer points of the technique went over his head -- "I am neither too technically civilised a person nor a computing guru," he confessed -- but the basic idea was clear enough.

"If you wrote a piece of code in a computer, saved it on a [Commodore] C-cassette, took that cassette out and listened to it with an ordinary cassette recorder you heard sounds," Lehtonen explained. "But as sounds could be copied to another tape and as sounds could be transmitted over radio, then why should it not be possible to receive even these sounds of the code, record them with a C-cassette recorder and have the recorded sounds do their trick in another computer?" In other words -- why couldn't you distribute code by simply playing it over the radio while enthusiasts taped it for later use?

For their experiments, the Dutch had developed their own BASICODE language variant, but Lehtonen chose to use regular BASIC code "to make things simpler." YLE experimented cautiously with the idea through the early 1980s. Early attempts took place on "Kansan mikrokerho," a YLE show about computers whose title loosely translates from Finnish into "Everybody's micro club."

Encouraged by a series of rough tries, Lehtonen and his team decided to go for the gold on August 21, 1985 with a short bit of code broadcast as part of YLE's "Radio Rex" technology magazine. The script calculated how many years, months, and days elapsed between two dates supplied by the user. The hosts asked their computer-equipped listeners to turn their devices on and to record what they came to call the "buzzing."

Then the buzzing began -- and lasted for 33 seconds. Here is the script as it streamed:

Following this half minute long stream, the show's staff nervously asked listeners to let them know whether the code actually delivered its expected results. "According to the received feedback the programme had worked in all parts of the country with no problems," a report about the experiment noted.

Lehtonen was delighted. "The proof of the pudding is in eating," he said. "The code part did not get any special treatment as for us. It was just a bit of sounds just like the speech or music. And hey, presto! -- this worked as expected and we received positive feedback from all over Finland, the most faraway report coming from Keminmaa, about 600 km north from Helsinki."

Riding a silicon horse
Emboldened, the producers soon challenged their fans to make the code more sophisticated -- to, for example, add a subroutine so that the program would not accept "February 30" as input -- then submit their new versions to the network on cassettes.

Not only did versions of these BASIC programs get snailmailed into YLE's offices, but listeners quickly submitted entirely new code of their own. Eero Tunkelo sent in that program he wrote for his sister, which was eventually "buzzed" over the airwaves.

Lehtonen decided that it was time to make the code transmissions a fortnightly event, with each episode titled "Silikoni."

"The name is a Finnish pun that does not translate," the report on the broadcasts continued. "The base is, of course silicon, the raw material of the computer chips. But spelled with a 'k' instead of a 'c' it becomes a Finnish word that can be understood to mean a silicon horse. You see, in the Ancient times, a poet rode the winged horse Pegasus and wrote with a feather taken from its wing. Now a poet would naturally use a computer and a word processor, thus riding a silicon horse."

Producers gave out small prizes to participants, including T-shirts and bags with Silikoni logos. The show also distributed posters that youngsters could hang on their bedroom doors. "Please do not disturb!" one read. "I am just listening to the Silikoni!"

For the young Tunkelo, Silikoni was a revelation, a show that taught him he wasn't alone. "I now felt like I was part of something," he said.

John Tarnoff: 21st Century Career Reinvention for Boomers (Part 1)

On July 14th, I was asked to give a TEDX Talk for TEDxSoCal in Long Beach, CA (home of the big TED event) on the theme of "The Alchemy of Transformation ... Our Selves, Our Work Places, Our Living Spaces." In looking at this question, it occurred to me that while my professional work is focused on helping the next generation of media content professionals adapt to the amazing and pervasive paradigm shifts introduced by digital technology, here was an opportunity to discuss some of these same paradigm shifts for an audience that I had never really addressed: my own Baby Boomer generation.

While the students that I work with (and the schools they go to) are trying to figure out how to prepare for entering the media industry and developing new careers, the Baby Boomers are on the other side of equation, looking at how to wrap up their careers and transition into what we commonly refer to as "retirement."

The well-known problem for the Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964), is that, as a generation, we have not prepared for this transition. There are many statistics available here, but the most striking number to me is this one: 80 percent of us have saved less than $100,000 for our retirement. Given the economics of the last five years, and the prospects ahead of us, what this means is that the Boomers are going to have to keep working -- and the problem there is that neither we nor the society at large are prepared for us to remain in the work force.

My point in the TEDx talk is propose some ideas on how to reinvent ourselves in order to maintain our relevance in and relevance to the workforce. We need to start reframing who we are and what we think we're capable of doing, and to reject the idea that old dogs can't learn new tricks.

After all, we have some pretty amazing life experience to draw from. If our kids are actually listening to all of our music (my daughter is currently negotiating vociferously for access to my 600 hundred-album stack of vinyl...), then we can't be all that out of touch. If we were able to piss off our parents and master the art of talking on the phone, doing homework and listening to the radio, we should be able to figure out how to multi-task between Text, Email, Voicemail and Skype while sitting at Starbucks in between meetings.

As I know from working with my graduate students, there's a lot that they know, and there's a lot that they don't know. They and we want and need guidance from one other. It's one big ecology: our wisdom and experience + their digital awareness and limitless passion.

In the midst of so many paradigm shifts that I'm observing in the digital age, one emerges out of this situation that I'd like to share. In the 20th century, we thought of life in three broad stages: Education, Career and Retirement. In the 21st century however, I believe that these three need to be replaced by Self Awareness, Creation, and Service. While this is guidance for young people starting out, it is also an important concept for those of us on the other side of the curve.

In Part 2 of this post, I'll explore that concept in more detail. For now, I invite you to view the TEDx Talk to hear some specific suggestions on how the Boomers can take back some control of our careers as we press on into unexpected and uncharted territory. Hint: The kids can be alright!

Research suggests that both red and white wine are "equal acidic offenders" when it comes to increasing the risk of breast cancer, according to a recent published study.

"We were interested in teasing out red wine's effects on breast cancer risk. There is reason to suspect that red wine might have beneficial effects based on previous studies of heart disease and prostate cancer," Dr. Polly Newcomb, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, noted in a hospital statement.

"The general evidence is that alcohol consumption overall increases breast cancer risk, but the other studies made us wonder whether red wine might in fact have some positive value," she explained.

The findings are based on 6,327 women with breast cancer and 7,558 women matched for age who provided information about their drinking habits and other risk factors for breast cancer. The women, who were between 20 and 69 years old, were from Wisconsin, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The frequency of alcohol consumption was similar in both groups, and equal proportions of women in both groups reported consuming red wine and white wine.

According to Dr. Robert O. Seven charged over shootings of 4 La. deputies

NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana police have charged seven people in connection with shootings near New Orleans on Thursday that killed two sheriff's deputies at a trailer park and wounded two others, authorities said.?

Brian Lyn Smith, 24, of LaPlace was charged with attempted first-degree murder while six others also face charges linked to the violence, St. John Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Dane Clement said on Friday.?

The charges stem from a pair of related shootings early on Thursday in and around LaPlace, about 25 miles west of New Orleans, in which a gunman shot and wounded St. John Parish Deputy Michael Scott Boyington, 33, as he performed off-duty work directing traffic at a parking lot for Valero Energy Corp.'s St. Charles refinery, St. John Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre said.?

The gunman fled, and officers investigating the incident ended up at a trailer park in LaPlace. As they were interviewing two suspects, someone came out of a trailer with an assault weapon and shot dead the two officers and wounded another, Tregre said.?

The slain deputies were identified as Brandon Nielsen, 34, and Jeremy Triche, 27, while deputy Jason Triche, 30, was wounded.?

All of the charges are in connection with the shooting of Boyington, police said. The investigation into the shootings at the trailer park continues and is being led by the Louisiana State Police.?

Those charged include Terry Smith, 44, Derrick Smith, 22, Kyle David Joekel, 28, and Teniecha Bright, 21, all accused of being a principal to attempted first-degree murder, Clement said.?

Chanel Skains, 37, and Britney Keith, 23, were charged with accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder.?

Suspects Brian Lyn Smith and Joekel remain hospitalized with injuries they received in the shooting and will be booked upon release from the hospital, Clement said.?

High-speed chase
All the suspects were listed as LaPlace residents. Bonds ranging from $350,000 to $750,000 have been set for each. The injured police officers were in stable condition and doing well, Clement said.?

Authorities said Joekel was wanted in Kansas and in Nebraska over threats he was accused of making against law enforcement officers.

According to the sheriff's office in Gage County, Nebraska, Joekel threatened an officer and led police on a high-speed chase that ended when the car crashed and he tried to escape on foot.?

He is also wanted in Marshall County, Kansas, allegedly for making threats toward law enforcement and escaping on foot after a car chase there, authorities said.?

Louisiana State Police spokesman Sergeant Len Marie said several of the suspects have criminal histories and previous arrests, and one was on probation.?

Experts see little chance UK will seize Assange

LONDON (AP) ? It is an inviolable diplomatic principle: British law and the British police cannot reach inside the embassy of a foreign country.

But Ecuador says British officials have threatened to march in and grab WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from its London embassy, where he has been holed up in a bid to escape extradition to Sweden over sex crimes allegations.

WHAT HAS BRITAIN SAID?

Under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, diplomatic posts are treated as the territory of the foreign nation.

But in a letter to Ecuadorean officials, Britain cited a little-known law, the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act of 1987, which it said would allow it to arrest Assange within the embassy premises.

The law gives Britain the power to revoke the status of a diplomatic mission if the state in question "ceases to use land for the purposes of its mission or exclusively for the purposes of a consular post" ? but only if such a move is "permissible under international law."

In its letter, Britain adds, "We very much hope not to get this point."

WHEN WAS THIS LAW PASSED?

The law was passed after the 1984 siege of the Libyan embassy in London, which was sparked when someone inside the building fatally shot a British police officer, Yvonne Fletcher. An 11-day standoff ended with Britain severing diplomatic relations with Libya and expelling all its diplomats.

The Associated Press could find no record of the law ever being used to justify forcible entry into an embassy.

SO CAN BRITAIN GRAB ASSANGE?

Many legal experts are skeptical. The diplomatic fallout would be immense, leaving British missions around the world vulnerable to reprisals.

And lawyers say a British court would likely be unwilling to sanction a raid on the embassy.

The law was intended for situations in which a diplomatic mission was being used for serious wrongdoing such as terrorism. Sheltering Assange hardly compares.

Former government lawyer Carl Gardner says a court would likely rule that using the law against Assange would be inconsistent with the intent of the law.

"I don't see it as a realistic prospect that the government would do a dash for the airport with him," he said.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Ecuador says it will announce Thursday whether to grant Assange asylum. But the standoff is likely to continue.

Britain says it has a legal duty to extradite the 41-year-old Australian to Sweden, regardless of what Ecuador decides. If he emerges from the embassy, he will be arrested.

Britain says it wants to find a diplomatic solution, but with Ecuador enraged, that looks farther off than ever.

However, some began questioning the Syrian dictator's actions as the regime violently cracked down on opponents. Activists estimate some 20,000 people have been killed in the past 18 months of fighting that has descended into civil war.

Others support the regime, fearing for the future of their sect in a rebellion lead by orthodox Muslims and worried Syria will collapse into chaos.

It's not clear how many residents now support the rebels, but backing for Assad has clearly eroded. Even some of the most fervent regime supporters are critical of Assad's rule.

Last month, simmering tensions erupted into violence.

It began when several dozen rebel supporters demonstrated in Majdal Shams, the largest Druse village on the Golan. Kahlouni, the pharmacist, said demonstrators hurled insults at the Syrian leader. Regime supporters struck back with eggs, rocks and shoes, said Mayada Abu Jabal, a 39-year-old physiotherapist.

Following the brawl, Druse leaders threatened to banish anyone showing public support for either side, fearing more serious violence, said Majdal Shams Mayor Dolan Abu Saleh. Religious authorities wouldn't comment. The mayor said two people were briefly expelled.

The divisions even threaten to disrupt an upcoming wedding in Majdal Shams later this month.

Some 2,000 people are expected to attend, but members of the Abu Jabal clan fear the bride's father may refuse to come. Many in the large clan support the rebels. The bride's immediate family supports Assad's regime.

The groom's sister, Shefa Abu Jabal, said tensions were so bad that the couple canceled the traditional pre-wedding visit of the groom's relatives to the bride's family, fearing it would end in an argument.

"We aren't sure if he'll come for his daughter's sake," Shefa Abu Jabal said of the father of the bride, who was not available for comment.

Now, talk of politics is banned in the house. Instead, the groom's mother busied herself with baking date-stuffed semolina wedding treats.

But the political battle continues, fought with graffiti scribbled on the walls of cinderblock homes spread over several hills.

"Bashar Assad" was scrawled on a concrete wall. The Arabic word for "may he fall" was smeared over, converting the anti-regime chant into a defiant fist-pump for the Syrian leader.

"God, Bashar and Syria, only" ? a chant of pro-Assad supporters, was sprayed nearby. Assad's name was wiped off by anti-regime activists.

Online, the "Golan Times" cheers on the regime with articles like "Opposition member thinks of returning to Syria to get free medical treatment." On the website "Jawlan" ? the Arabic name for the Golan ? there's an essay on the plight of Syrian refugees in Jordan.

The Druse are spread across Israel, Lebanon and Syria. They survived in a turbulent region by showing allegiance to their country of residence, banning marriage outside the faith and shunning conversions.

Some 100,000 Druse in Israel are loyal to the Jewish state, while Lebanese Druse are important players in their country's politics. In Syria, Druse make up a tiny minority of some 3 percent in a country of 22 million and are marginal to the bloody power struggle there.

Only one time before was there such bitterness among the Golan Druse, when a minority of residents supported Israel's annexation of the territory in 1981, said Salim Brake, a Golan resident and political analyst. They were beaten by other residents, and the controversy ended with the overwhelming majority deciding not to recognize Israel's annexation, Brake said.

Now, not discussing politics appears to be the only way to still tensions.

Apple farmer Yousef Shams, 61, described rebel supporters as "donkeys." His pro-rebel relatives say they don't like to talk politics with him, hoping to preserve family relations.

Rebel supporter Ayman Abu Jabal said he used to argue with his wife Sana, until she shifted allegiances to his side.

People tend to socialize in their own groups. On a recent night, Abu Jabal and his wife stretched out in an apple orchard beside Majdal Shams. They and their buddies, also rebel supporters, chatted, spoke by Skype to activists in Syria, snacked on nuts, smoked water pipes and made jokes about regime supporters.

Still, there's a somber mood in Majdal Shams.

Both sides say they feel relations are irreparably broken. Regime supporter Kahlouni said it was best to remain quiet.

"We aren't even the size of a neighborhood in Damascus," he said, referring to the Golan's Arab residents. "Let the days judge who is right."
