Getty Center to restore key Jackson Pollock work

(AP) ? "Mural," the seminal, larger-than-life work that represented a sea change in abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock's career, will be traveling from Iowa to Los Angeles this summer for a little nip and tuck.

The painting, which is nearly 70 years old, is being shipped to the Getty Center, where scientists at the Getty's Conservation Institute and curators at its J. Paul Getty Museum hope to restore it to pristine condition.

When the work is complete, the oil-on-canvas painting will be exhibited at the Getty Center museum for three months before it is returned to its owner, the University of Iowa.

The work is more than 8 feet high and nearly 20 feet long. It represents a key moment in Pollock's career, as he began to move from creating more symbolic, regional forms to the abstract expressionism that would reach full bloom in his famous "drip" paintings, in which he poured paint directly onto the canvas.

"It may be the most important painting from the second half of the 20th century," said Tom Learner, head of modern and contemporary art research at the Getty Conservation Institute.

Pollock created it as a commission from wealthy art collector Peggy Guggenheim, who gave it to the University of Iowa in 1951.

The work, filled with colorful, twisting animal-like forms, was described by the artist himself as representing a stampede of animals from the American West.

Although it is dated 1943, Pollock is said to have created it in one burst of frenetic activity on New Year's Day 1944, after complaining for months that he was "blocked" and couldn't come up with an idea to put on canvas for Guggenheim.

"I've had to tear out the partition between the front and middle room to get the damned thing up," he once wrote of the painting's size. "I have it stretched now. It looks pretty big, but exciting as all hell."

Over the years, the huge work has begun to sag. Getty experts will study how that might be repaired and how to prevent it from continuing in the future, said Yvonne Szafran, head of paintings conservation for the J. Paul Getty Museum.

It will also be cleaned and a varnish that appears to have been put on it sometime during the 1960s or '70s will be removed.

Experts also will look closely at the paints Pollock used. Learner said there is some thought that Pollock, who worked in auto and house paints later in his career, may have used some house paint on "Mural" as well.

Szafran estimated the work will take as long as 21 months. It hasn't been determined whether the painting will be flown or driven to Los Angeles.

There was talk last year of putting "Mural," which is valued at $140 million, on the auction block to raise money for art scholarships.

That proposal, by state Rep. Scott Raecker, was quickly shelved, however, after the university and others objected.

One state representative, Todd Taylor, said such a sale would have amounted to "cultural vandalism."

Curry spice, omega-3 fatty acid preserve walking ability following spinal-cord injury

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? UCLA researchers discovered that a diet enriched with a popular omega-3 fatty acid and an ingredient in curry spice preserved walking ability in rats with spinal-cord injury. Published June 26 in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, the findings suggest that these dietary supplements help repair nerve cells and maintain neurological function after degenerative damage to the neck.

"Normal aging often narrows the spinal canal, putting pressure on the spinal cord and injuring tissue," explained principal investigator Dr. Langston Holly, associate professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "While surgery can relieve the pressure and prevent further injury, it can't repair damage to the cells and nerve fibers. We wanted to explore whether dietary supplementation could help the spinal cord heal itself."

The UCLA team studied two groups of rats with a condition that simulated cervical myelopathy -- a progressive disorder that often occurs in people with spine-weakening conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Cervical myelopathy can lead to disabling neurological symptoms, such as difficulty walking, neck and arm pain, hand numbness and weakness of the limbs. It's the most common cause of spine-related walking problems in people over 55.

The first group of animals was fed rat chow that replicated a Western diet high in saturated fats and sugar. The second group consumed a standard diet supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, and curcumin, a compound in turmeric, an Indian curry spice. A third set of rats received a standard rat diet and served as a control group.

Why these supplements? DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid shown to repair damage to cell membranes. Curcumin is a strong antioxidant that previous studies have linked to tissue repair. Both reduce inflammation.

"The brain and spinal cord work together, and years of research demonstrate that supplements like DHA and curcumin can positively influence the brain," said coauthor Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, professor of neurosurgery. "We suspected that what works in the brain may also work in the spinal cord. When we were unable to find good data to support our hypothesis, we decided to study it ourselves."

The researchers recorded a baseline of the rats walking and re-examined the animals' gait on a weekly basis. As early as three weeks, the rats eating the Western diet demonstrated measurable walking problems that worsened as the study progressed. Rats fed a diet enriched with DHA and curcumin walked significantly better than the first group even six weeks after the study's start.

Next, the scientists examined the rats' spinal cords to evaluate how diet affected their injury on a molecular level. The researchers measured levels of three markers respectively linked to cell-membrane damage, neural repair and cellular communication.

The rats that ate the Western diet showed higher levels of the marker linked to cell-membrane damage. In contrast, the DHA and curcumin appeared to offset the injury's effect in the second group, which displayed equivalent marker levels to the control group.

Levels of the markers linked to neural repair and cellular communication were significantly lower in the rats raised on the Western diet. Again, levels in the animals fed the supplemented diet appeared similar to those of the control group.

"DHA and curcumin appear to invoke several molecular mechanisms that preserved neurological function in the rats," said Gomez-Pinilla. "This is an exciting first step toward understanding the role that diet plays in protecting the body from degenerative disease."

"Our findings suggest that diet can help minimize disease-related changes and repair damage to the spinal cord," said Holly. "We next want to look at other mechanisms involved in the cascade of events leading up to chronic spinal-cord injury. Our goal is to identify which stages will respond best to medical intervention and identify effective steps for slowing the disease process."

Holly's and Gomez-Pinilla's coauthors included Dr. Donald Blaskiewicz, Aiguo Wu, Cameron Feng and Zhe Ying, all of UCLA. Their research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (RO1 NS056413) and the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation.

Treatment

Despite the best preventative measure, sometimes treatment is necessary to get rid of a pest problem. However, you can stay green while treating for pests. Your exterminator should give you options and information to make the best choice for you home. Here are a few of the options that may be made available to you.

- Mechanical measures. Traps and barriers are two methods of mechanical pest control measures. You can trap an animal and relocate it and you can set up barrier to keep it from reentering the home.

- Cultural control. This means altering the environment to deter pest or convince them to relocate on their own. Moving a woodpile away from the house so termites choose a different feeding ground is one example of cultural control.

- Targeted treatments. You may have to use some type of treatment to completely eradicate a dangerous or damaging pest. However, if you hire an environmentally sensitive company then they can target the treatment to as small an area as possible. They may also be able to use detergent sprays instead of toxic chemicals.

Whatever you think of the latest round of Chromebooks, school districts have clearly latched on to existing models. Over 500 school districts across Europe and the US are currently deploying the Google-powered laptops for learning the web way. Specialized web app packs and that rare leasing model are already keeping the material relevant and the hardware evergreen, but new certification for US ready-for-college criteria will go a long way towards making sure principals everywhere take a shine to Chrome OS in the future. That still leaves a lot of schools going the more traditional Mac or Windows PC route, with the occasional tablet strategy thrown in; regardless, we're sure Google doesn't mind taking any noticeable chunk of the market in a relatively brief period of time. We'll see if there's more reasons for Mountain View to get excited in a few days.

Vietnamese vice president visits Thailand

BANGKOK, June 22- Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra welcomed Vietnam?s Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan at Government House on Friday, as both sides agreed to foster bilateral ties between the two countries and support greater roles for women at the regional level.

Madame Doan officially visit Thailand on June 20-24 as a guest of the Thai government to strengthen bilateral ties, as the two countries are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

After a welcoming ceremony, Ms Yingluck and Madame Doan held bilateral talks to exchange ideas and views on furthering bilateral relations, cooperation, and development as well as to foster strategic partnership in terms of politics, economies, society, culture, and education.

During her official trip to the kingdom, the vice president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam will travel to Thailand?s northeastern provinces of Nakhon Phanom and Khon Kaen, where there are historical connections between Thailand and Indochina, and is to meet with provincial governors.

In addition, Madame Doan is set to visit the Thai-Vietnamese Friendship Village and meet with the large Vietnamese community in Nakhon Phanom where Ho Chi Minh, father and first president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) from 1945 to 1969 and an iconic leader of the post-World War II anti-colonial movement in Asia, once resided.

Affectionately known to Vietnamese as Bac (Uncle) Ho, the Vietnamese independence leader visited Bangkok and lived in Nakhon Phanom in the late 1920s. (MCOT online news)

Mexico troops detain son of most-wanted drug lord 'Chapo' Guzman

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican and U.S. authorities said Friday they are checking DNA and photographs of a detained drug suspect whom they introduced as the presumed son of fugitive drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

The Mexican navy presented a young man amid great fanfare on Thursday, identifying him as Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, who is believed to be son of the head of Mexico's powerful Sinaloa Cartel. But by Friday, both Mexico and the U.S. officials were scrambling after his lawyer told Mexican news media that he is Felix Beltran Leon, a car salesman from western Jalisco state who has no relationship to Guzman.

The lawyer, Heriberto Rangel Mendez, told The Associated Press he would show proof of the man's identity, but did not immediately offer further comment.

The Mexican Attorney General's Office issued a statement saying information identifying him as son of Guzman came from the U.S. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency said the information came from Mexico.

"The Mexican Navy and Mexican law enforcement have said this is El Chapo's son and that's what we took," said DEA spokesman Rusty Payne, noting that the DEA is working separately to confirm the man's identity.

An official with the Mexican attorney general's office, who wasn't authorized to speak on the record, said the office is also studying photographs of Guzman and his family. The suspect didn't resemble a photograph of Guzman's son recently issued by the U.S. Treasury Department.

The possible

misidentification could be embarrassing for both countries in the cat-and-mouse game they are playing with Guzman, who has been on the run since escaping from a Mexican prison in a laundry cart in 2001. The Treasury Department has called him the world's most powerful drug lord.

The Mexican Navy said that Guzman Salazar has been taking on an increasing leadership role in the cartel and purportedly served as the administrator of his father's fortune, estimated by Forbes magazine at about $1 billion.

Mexican authorities have said that the man they presented to the news media on Thursday was captured during a raid by marines in Zapopan, an upscale suburb of the western city of Guadalajara, thanks to intelligence work and information from U.S. authorities. Also captured in the raid was an alleged 19-year-old Sinaloa cartel member, Kevin Daniel Beltran Rios. The pair was caught with a grenade launcher and four grenades, two assault rifles, two pistols and $135,000 in cash.

Guzman Salazar is wanted in the United States on an outstanding extradition request, to face charges in Chicago related to drug trafficking.
